xxxHOLiC Novel

×××HOLiC ANOTHERHOLiC Landolt-Ring Aerosol (×××HOLiC アナザーホリック ランドルト環エアロゾル)

Has anybody read this? Was it good or was it really good?

I’ve been considering this for a while but I’d like to solicit opinions from everyone else before opting to buy this out!

I’m treating this differently since it’s HOLiC so I added this to my must-buy list for the year.  It’s way better than listing down New Year’s resolutions isn’t it? XD

Publisher Del Rey had already been out with the English version of it which according to the Wiki, was officially put into sale just October of last year! The original was published in Japan sometime in 2006, so I am sure thousands and thousands might have already read this.

I was intrigued by the fact that the same author who wrote the Death Note: Another Note novel (a friend was freakin’ crazy about it), Nisio Isin, adapted the original story by CLAMP’s xxxHOLiC obviously.

The illustrations included in it were done by CLAMP the same, so this is some kind of a collaboration between both parties. Must be cool!

Just a quick product info for me and for those who haven’t known of it yet:

Nothing could have thrilled Kimihiro more than stumbling upon the bizarre wish-granting shop of the beautiful but unnerving Yuko Ichihara, who solemnly promises to make the spirits plaguing Kimihiro go away just as soon as her fee – rendered in daily afternoon chores at her shop – is paid in full.

Of course, the thrill wears off as soon as Kimihiro realizes that his payment plan bears a disturbing resemblance to indentured servitude… eternal indentured servitude. Still he soldiers on, ready for whatever number of adventures lie ahead. But in Kimihiro’s case, three may not be the charm!…

By the way, it’s a 208 page novel so it’s worth $16 or so and if the story’s really that good then gotta grab one for myself! :3

Any thoughts on this would be a great help! So please and thank you! ^^

Being a XXXholic-holic, I had high hopes for this novelization, but found that it had almost nothing of the qualities that made me love the manga. There is almost no supernatural presence, and while we’re told about Watanuki’s ability to see spirits, the writer gives no sense of what this would actually be like. All the supporting cast is kept offstage, and since a large part of the manga’s charm is Watanuki’s love/hate relationship with Domeki, this takes the personality right out of the story. Furthermore, the whole thing is told in an artsy-fartsy stream-of- conciousness style that is just plain annoying. There are three nice drawings by CLAMP, but fans will still want to give this one a miss. Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? (Report this)

Avoid this addiction, November 15, 2008

This is a light novel that tries to be a manga collection. And maybe it is the translation, but it just isn’t very good.

The book consists of three stories. The first was adapted into the anime as episode 17. It involves a young woman who rejects happiness by acting out in minor ways. The second involves a young woman who appears to be haunted her recently dead friend. And the third involves Watanuki meeting a person who claims to have similar powers.

Part of the problem with the book is the disconcerting and unclear way the author shifts between first and third person perspectives. In addition, either the original author or the translator sometimes leaves off quotes, making lines that characters are saying at the time into statements relayed by others.

Also, the story is entirely too mundane. Only the third revolves anything supernatural. Of the XXXHolic cast, only Watanuki and Yuko appear, the others are all mentioned in passing, but unused.

The first story is fine, but the anime did it better. The second story is interesting enough, but is more like a detective story than a XXXHolic story. Without giving to much away, the ‘Holic’ of the story is not a ‘Holic’. And the third story is just bad. It is like a fanfic intro, in which the author attempts to introduce his own pet version of the rules of the universe. Not that that is bad in and of itself, butit is poorly executed, and the character who introduces the the author’s theory is an annoying jerk who spends as much time insulting Watanuki as he does explaining his theory.

Thanks Quinn-chan! Those were really helpful. Maybe I’ll consider crashing it out my wish list now since this promises to be a big disappointment.

If it doesn’t met the same standards and hasn’t captured the Holic’s core then, this would be a waste of time! What’s with a couple of CLAMP illustrations, we can find much better ones than them, right?

I would hope so. But I am of the opinion that ANY Holic is better then none. =)

I just got it on Friday, and finished it this morning.

It’s very good… I was actually surprised at how good it was. The stories are very well written, and the English translator is very thorough at explaining the language discrepancies. The stories are quite compelling, and are in the style of the earlier chapters (no spoilers: his eyes are both blue). The stories alternate POV between Watanuki and the customer, and mostly explore the relationship between Watanuki and Yuuko. There are no pairings, and Doumeki and Himawari are mentioned, but don’t actually show in the stories. One interesting thing is that it doesn’t actually have much supernatrual in it…

Overall, it keeps to the spirit of xxxHolic, and has some interesting ideas that compliment the actual manga. Also, it comes with a pretty pin-up of Watanuki and Yuuko. <3

And so it has been said! Was it sprawling with spoilers?
I’m so, so jealous! Gotta grab one soon! ^^
      Thanks for the info Mirrankei!
